A Disconnect

Nature includes a great deal of benefits for the mind, body, and spirit. Healing is possible and proven in the restoration of all aspects of our being. A disconnection from nature have common consequences, like a vitamin D deficiency, obesity, depression, loneliness and anxiety, to name a few. In her book “The Nature Fix: Why Nature Makes Us Happier, Healthier, and More Creative,” Dr. Florence Williams states that “We don’t experience natural environments enough to realize how restored they can make us feel…studies also show they make us healthier, more creative, more empathetic and more apt to engage with the world and with each other.” Back in 2001, the Environmental Protection Agency found through its National Human Activity Pattern Survey, that adults spent over 93% of time indoors or in their car. This pattern of disconnection with nature lends itself to many negative consequences.

Nature Heals

Studies show that being in nature, even just seeing plants, flowers and green spaces, actually helps people to relax— their heart rate slows and blood pressure decreases. Trees release “compounds called phytoncides…that have been shown to reduce stress hormones and anxiety while improving blood pressure and immunity” Dr. Eva Selhub says. Environmental psychologist Roger Ulrich conducted a study that analyzed the scientific measurements showing the powerful effects of a garden within a hospital, which actually quickened the healing time of patients, despite what illness they had. Views of nature are shown to reduce anger, anxiety and pain. Benefits occur in peoples’ muscle tension, blood pressure, heart and brain activity.

Benefits

Physiological
As human beings, our bodies are wired to be electrical. The Earth has an electron-rich, negative charge that provides antioxidant electrons that destroy free radicals. So being in contact with the Earth, like walking barefoot on the grass, allows your body to absorb negative electrons, allowing your body to maintain the same electrical potential as the Earth.

Health
Being outdoors is proven to be helpful in fighting inflammation— a symptom that is at the root of almost every disease. Spending time outdoors also improves sleep patterns, reduces stress, decreases pain, heals wounds more quickly, and reduces blood viscosity. Going for a walk in nature is proven to decrease any ruminating thought patterns, or those negative thoughts you can have that cycle through your mind over and over again.

Physical Wellness
Spending time in nature is effective in reducing depression, anxiety, stress, treating PTSD, and improving your overall quality of life. Exercising in nature is especially useful, as it increases feelings of invigoration, positive thought processes and decreases fatigue.
