Individual Therapy

Why Individual Therapy?

Individual therapy inspires change and improves an individual’s quality of life by helping guests to overcome personal obstacles. It can also facilitate the expression of positive feelings by working through difficult situations. Further, building a relationship with a therapist helps foster trust and self-confidence. Through participation in therapy sessions, guests learn how to create and maintain a life free of substances.

At Royal Life Centers at Sound Recovery, guests meet with their therapist regularly throughout all phases of treatment. The goal of individual therapy is to teach guests techniques and skills that help them work through personal issues by discovering solutions to their problems. We at Royal Life Centers at Sound emphasize the idea that individual therapy is a collaborative, two-sided treatment and encourage guests to be open with their therapist. For therapy to be effective, guests and therapists need to express their thoughts and respond to one another’s ideas and suggestions. Our therapy program works in tandem with our medication management and case management programs to help guests to build the foundation they need for success in recovery. Individual Therapy treats symptoms such as:
  • Co-occurring disorders*
    • Anxiety
    • Depression
    • PTSD
    • Bipolar
    • BPD
  • Low self-esteem
  • Environmental stressors
  • Triggers and cravings
  • Maladaptive behaviors
  • Underlying causes of addiction
  • Catastrophizing
  • Anhedonia
*Co-occurring disorders listed include, but are not limited, to the following mental disorders. Guests work one-on-one with their therapists to design and execute an Individual Service Plan (ISP) that identifies areas of the guest’s life that they would like to change or improve upon. This plan helps guests to break down their goals and objectives into manageable pieces and work toward creating achievable solutions. Breaking down goals into manageable, achievable bits is essential in recovery, particularly early recovery. It gives guests a realistic look at creating expectations for themselves. Within their ISP, each guest collaborates with their therapist, communicating their stressors, triggers, and fears regarding their recovery. Therapists at Royal Life Centers at Sound Recovery supply each guest with techniques outlined in therapy methods such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT). Individual Therapy techniques treat addiction with:
  • Relapse prevention and management of cravings
  • Emotional regulation
  • Introducing and implementing lifestyle changes
  • Strengthening relationships
  • Stress management
  • Identifying dysfunctional/unproductive thinking
  • Adopting healthy coping mechanisms
  • Developing positive habits
  • Promoting healthy expressions of thoughts/emotions
  • Shifting behavior patterns
  • Establishing problem-solving practices
  • Instilling conflict resolution
  • Identifying strengths and weaknesses
  • Building a support network
  • Encouraging introspection and growth
We don’t place our guests into pre-determined, pre-packaged treatment tracks because we believe that the best approach to addiction treatment is a custom-tailored plan to fit each guest. Because individual therapy focuses on one guest at a time, therapists get to know guests on a more personal level, and vice versa. At Royal Life Centers at Sound Recovery, our therapists are trained in a variety of cognitive and behavioral therapies and utilize the different applications on a case-by-case in order to best help each guest. Individual therapy is just one part of our holistic approach to addiction therapy at Royal Life Centers at Sound.
