Art Therapy

What is Art Therapy?

Part of our holistic therapy program at Royal Life Centers at Sound includes art therapy. In art therapy, guests craft collages, diagrams, and other forms of visual art using a variety of media. A major benefit, in particular, is that it engages the mind, body, and spirit. Ultimately, the goal of this holistic therapy is to promote emotional healing through creative expression.

Creative expression not only supports cognitive function, but research also supports the idea that visual creativity offers numerous physiological and psychological benefits.

Art Therapy
The American Art Therapy Association (AATA) defines art therapy as “an integrative mental health and human services profession that enriches… lives… through active art-making, creative process, applied psychological theory, and human experience within a psychotherapeutic relationship.” This type of therapy can also build on existing social skills, support treatment goals, and improve brain functioning. The aim is to create a positive environment in which guests can improve communication and concentration skills. The AATA cites the following as benefits of art in therapy:
  • Improved cognition and sensory-motor function
  • Increased self-esteem and self-awareness
  • Cultivation of emotional resilience
  • Promotion of insight
  • Enhanced social skills
  • Reduced conflicts and help with resolution
Art therapy is a relaxed way of making self-discoveries as well as building trust between guests and counselors. It has also been found to benefit people with depression and anxiety disorders. For example, PTSD and OCD, mental health conditions that often co-occur with substance use disorder. At Royal Life Centers at Sound, art therapy is just one more way we put our guests first in our programming. We hope that you’ll consider joining the Royal Life family and starting your recovery journey with us.
